View Full Version : Latest crackpot rage -- "orbs" in digital images

Perusing Michael Covington's web site (he's the author of the probably most successful and useful book on amateur astrophotography currently on the market), I found mention of (cue creepy music) a new parapsychological or whatever phenomenon -- "orbs" appearing in digital camera images. Apparently, the flash lights up dust motes, pollen, flying insects, and whatnot near the lens, and these bright spots are imaged as out-of-focus blobs. But the Believers, of course, have a different explanation: they're spirits of the (apparently not entirely) departed, etc.

Anybody who's ever fooled with collimating a telescope, or viewed an out-of-focus star image, has seen this sort of pattern before. But not these folks... Heck, one "spirit orb" even has a smiley face. Fine example of pareidolia.

More similar stuff: "rods." Including "Roswell rods."

Debunked here. http://www.amsky.com/ufos/rods/

Somebody needs to give each of these Believers a free copy of Carl Sagan's "The Demon-Haunted World." On second thought, it's probably a waste of cellulose.

Yeah! especially in winter, when it is snowing...

Indeed. I remember seeing such egregious examples like this (http://www.orbsbybeans.com/newphoto699.html) a couple years ago.

And from the gallery page (http://www.orbsbybeans.com/photogallery.html):

Orbs are multi-dimensional beings being used by Interplanetary life forms to view life on Earth.

Warning: the above page may cause headaches, nausea, and gnashing of teeth.

Chemtrail central has some posts about orbs. I suppose a "chemtrail" that is associated with "orbs" would be a woo-woo's wet dream.

Yeah. But I don't know if it's the latest. It was old hat when I saw them in my shower (http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/lenin.html). Different kind of orb though.

I don't often get handed straight lines like that, but I'll let it pass.
