Well, way back in September of 2003, I made this post (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8157&postdays=0&postorder=asc&star t=22):

no kids yet, but we're expecting in about 15-16 months.
Now, here it is, 15 months later, and I just got the call today.

Our new daughter is named Shao Yang Bing. She was born on January 7, 2004, and is waiting for us at the Shaoyang Children's Welfare Institute in Hunan Province, China.

We'll hopefully be traveling over there to get her before the end of January.

Tomorrow we should get the full referral paperwork with pictures and everything, which I'll be posting here (http://sio.midco.net/seanandbobbi/).

We're on Cloud Nine right now! :D

Now I have to try and sleep . . . see you all tomorrow!

I do have a question, though, especically since there seems to be confusion in the thread. Is Shao her family name, or did you anglicize it when you posted and Bing is? (IIRC, Shao is a family name.)

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

As far as the name/parentage thing goes:

Due to a combination of societal pressure to produce a son and laws against having more than one kid, lots of baby girls get abandoned in China - those that don't just get killed outright. So, while there are exceptions, it's almost certain that nobody knows who this little girl's birth parents are, and the parents would just as soon keep it that way.

I didn't anglicize the name, that's the way it was given to me (when we get the full referral today, it should have the actual Chinese characters and what they mean). The Shao "family" name actually comes from the name of the orphanage. Pretty much all the babies there are "Shao something something".

Some parents who abandon their babies leave a note with a given name and as much other personal information as they can (we should find out if that happened with our little girl today, too). So, it's possible that the given "Yang Bing" came from the birth parents, and it's possible that it was given by the folks at the orphanage. If there was no note, the Jan. 7th birthdate is just an educated guess, as well.

As far as the name Bing, I made the joke last night when telling my family about it that, "We think the father's name was Chandler . . ." (even though it's part of her given name, it's still funny!) Bobbi thinks we should name her Cherry. :D

Captain Kidd, when you said, "Welcome to the club," are you referring to the general parents club, the more specific adoptive parents club, or the real specific Chinese adoptive parents club? :)

Captain Kidd
2004-Dec-14, 02:32 PM
General parents club, sorry, should have been more specific.

I have the deepest respect for those who choose to adopt, especially from overseas. We discussed it a bit when things were looking slim about our chances of having one ourselves but never did come to a conclusion.

My uncle was adopted from an orphanage near the North/South Korea border. My grandparents gave him an American name. He has a Korean name and birth certificate, but they might have been made up by the orphanage.

Too late, Lycus. According to the referral, it was officers of the "Riot Police Division of the Shaoyang City Public Security Bureau" who brought her to the orphanage. Five days old, and she was already causin' trouble.

That's my girl! ;)

(Unfortunately, the referral doesn't tell us where or how the police got her in the first place)

Congratulations, you two! The world is a little better off each time a baby gets adopted.

You realize that you are probably now going to have to adopt a different lifestyle: 2 AM ---> http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/sad/1/sad16.gif

Then maybe at one year she's outgrown such behavior. Best of luck!

Yeah, I'm hoping she's pretty much sleeping through the night by now. The trouble is, the time difference between here and there is 14 hours. By the time we get back all three of us will be up all night and sleeping all day!

Have you learned anything more about when you are getting her?

Are you going to rename her, or let her keep all 3 names and just add your last name to hers?

Beautifull child.

Thank you. :)

We haven't learned anything more yet. They say travel usually comes six to eight weeks after referral, and we should find out the details one or two weeks before we go. Our concern is Chinese New Year, which comes early February (I believe it's the 9th this year). Everything shuts down for a whole week over there for New Year. So, if we don't get to go and come back before then, we probably won't even go until after then.

As for the name, we're going to keep Bing (it means "bright, luminous") as her middle name, but will be giving her an English first name and our last name. ShaoYang is the name of the city she was born, and there were at least four other babies from that city in the same group of referrals as ours that were all named Shao Yang something.

You will need to teach her from a young age to reply to people that "no I was not named after a character on Friends."

To go with the "Merry Christmas" tread--I found that this is the Mandarin phrase for "merry Christmas"

Chinese -(Mandarin) Kung His Hsin Nien bing Chu Shen Tan

I thought that you might enjoy seing the word I bolded being part of it.

Gah, I hate bureaucracy. Our appointment with the US Consulate in Guangzhou to get her Visa has been set for . . . March 7th. Yes, that's March!

We don't have exact travel arrangements yet, but I'm guessing we'll fly out of here 'round about the 25th. Spend a couple days in Beijing, then go to Changsha (and get our little girl) on the 28th or 29th.

That's five weeks away! :(

Hey, NASA Fan, thanks for the kind words! :)

As far as how it's going, I can honestly say that this is the single best thing I have ever done in my life. She is absolutely wonderful. Our lives have certainly and irrevocably changed, but it's all been for the better.

She hasn't really started talking yet, but she does babble a lot. She does say "Mom" and "Dad" (although it sounds more like "Ma" and "Da"), which is kind of odd because we always refer to each other as "Mommy" and "Daddy" around her.

She understands so many words, though. I expect the talking thing to come to her like walking did - it was just like a switch was flipped one day. She'll probably go from this babbling directly into complete sentences. :)

I should really think about putting some more recent photos in that online album, too . . . 8-[
