View Full Version : I need a map of the Pleiades Star Cluster with names on it

For some mod I'm making for a fairly outdated yet adorable space sim, I need a map of the Pleiades Star Cluster, with the names of the stars on it — not just the big, familiar stars with nice mythological names, but also those who haven't gotten a better one than e.g. 33 Tauri or HD 23712.

I had expected to be able to pick from a multitude of search results at Google Image Search, but unfornately there wasn't much. Actually I found one picture that would suit my need, but it has the moon projected over it (?):

Can anyone help me to get that pic without the moon over it, or a similar picture?

(Btw I'm not a pro nor even a pro-ish amature in astrology, so it doesn't have to be too complicated.)

Thanks for your time!

Suggest you search google (press the "images" tab) for "Pleiades map"

http://www.naic.edu/~gibson/pleiades/ has a SIMBAD search that gives you a list of them - I know it is tedious but if you cannot access the database yourself you can just hit the 'data' link by each one, get an RA/DEC and plot them. Or you could work out a bounding query and search a database you have access to.

That pic is an illustration of the astronomy app. It has three different versions, from $3 to $40.

The moon is not projected on the Pleides, I believe that is a depiction of a time when the moon appeared in the Pleides. I could be wrong.

Astrology? You lost me.

Astrology? You lost me.
Must have been a freudian slip :) I was doing several things simultaneously, and I had in mind that I might also dig up some ancient astrological associations for inspiration.

Anyway, I think I got enough now to carry on. Thanks for your time.

I believe that is a depiction of a time when the moon appeared in the Pleiades.

That indeed happens, though you have to wait a while from any one spot. Here (http://www.astr.ua.edu/gifimages/M45Moon.jpg) is a genuine image (well, composite to increase dynamic range, but all shot in quick succession).
