I've been making movies for over a year, and I can't think of a good studio name, like "something" productions. Any ideas? :-k

Names like that usually should referr to what you do. Like "type" of movies you make.

As an exaple...um..."Blowchunx Productions" for movies like um...Terms of Endearment.

Or throw a couple of unassociated words together that make you go ? like Bonegrease Productions or Doglitter, Bunshoe...

What kind of movies? Name can make a huge difference to how you brand your product.

If astro/scifi based how about Accend Productions? (Astro is already a production unit)

If you propose a wider remit and don't want to be too specific, Ophelia Productions has a solid sound to it and seems to be free as well.

Or you could go for a more esosteric single word like Tendress.

Without knowing the product line though it's not easy

One of the easiest ways to come up with a unique name that is easy to trademark is to cut two or more words in half (or by syllables) and jam them, or parts of them, together.

Any volunteers?

Just go for a random selection of intials and numbers.

"AQ40 Productions"
Sounds like it stands for something, even though it doesn't.

Or just some random word out of context

"Junta Films"

Besides I don't think it matters what kind of movies you make - did the names Warner Bros, Paramount, Comubia or MGM ever refer to a film genre?

Inaria Productions

No, don't ask me how I came up with that...I just pulled it out of my hat. :)

Maybe pick a name from a foreign language:

Ladimir Productions
Nedoseka Films

Okay, I still stink at this.

Just my opinion...

I think it best if it were a nonsense word...one that doesn't really mean anything...which is what I was attempting to do. :)

CS...I think that your ideas for names are fine. :)

I'm going to assume that CS is me and take that as a compliment...

Thanks. :P

I have several sci fi
working on a fantasy spoof
several "randomness"
and my latest- a raindeer named Jasper that is constantly attacked by large, raindeer-eating rubber animals

so it would be hard to name it after my work, except random....ness

You do need to be carefull though, don't chose anything that might possibly be conceived as dubious or deviant (not that I'm suggesting your content is) It's just the presentation of the name, bankers, backers and distibution folk you have to be aware of. Also your films will evolve over time so you want something that will keep pace and not become dated or irrelevant too quickly.

I guess something spacey without being too spacey would be a possibility. So not Galaxy movies, that's too obvious, but more like Quasar productions, or Redshift studios or so.

In the vain of Letterman's Worldwide Pants production Co., how 'bout something like:

Hangnail Production Co.
Tanktop " "
Back Hair " "
Ear Wax " "
Rusty Nail " "
Dirt Clod " "
Tar Road " "
Flour Paste " "
Bar Code " "
Sunscreen " "

(I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. . . )

Mathematics terms (http://www.mathpropress.com/glossary/glossary.html) always sound slick, and don't really need any context.

Or, pick a random book or short story title that's generic enough not to infringe copyright. Like, ummm....

Signal to Noise

That's a good one!

I used the same process when I had to name my design studio. Eventually settled on Phase Space (it works because I have to explore all solutions within a given set of parameters 8) ).

Or, something like Soyuz Monkey. Anything that evokes small furry animals in freefall gets my vote. :D

Fast Glass

Hmmm, glass.

How about

Optical Illusions

or, if your stuff is really "out there"

Optical Delusions

Then you could go biological:

Fovea Productions

Retina Images Inc.

Cornea Copia Corporation

Iris Eyes Inc.

Dilated Pupil Productions

Rods and Cones Ltd.

Nervous Opticals Inc.

Astigmatic Productions

Cataract Productions Ltd.

Immacula Conceptions Inc.

Sclera Scope Productions

Let's see, there should be more...

I guess 'The mote in God's eye productions' isn't suitable either? :D Not to mention GLP 8-[
Ummm, what about other astronoical names? Betelgeuze, Arcturus, Centauri, Orion (oops, taken!), Cassiopeia (too difficult), Vega (hmm, I like Vega!), ...

A couple of ideas, part-inspired by earlier posts:

OutThere Productions (with or without a space between Out and There).
Freefall Films.
Cloud Nine. (Or variants - Cloud Nyne, for instance.)

I've gone for ideas that suggest SF and fantasy but aren't limited to it. Cloud Nine, for instance, could equally be romantic comedy.

Some of the other suggestions are interesting or amusing but don't always roll off the tongue. One I especially do like, though, is Fast Glass.

Or, and this is inspired by our newest member, (http://www.badastronomy.com/phpBB/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=5540) how about a translation of an english astronomical term?

Nicolas
2004-Dec-23, 01:03 PM
I don't know whether they sound that good or roll of the tongue for English speaking people:

zwart gat (black hole)

ruimteveer (space shuttle)

lancering (launch; I like this one, but you'd probably pronounce it
completely wrong considering English pronunciation: the E is stressed, not the A)

zonnewende (solstice, this one has something mysterious in its name I think, so does the English word)

you could always look into mythology to find names of course (Icarus...).
