The story (http://www.pen.k12.va.us/Div/Winchester/jhhs/math/lessons/algebra/sum.html) was that Gauss reasoned out the easy way to do such sums as a schoolchild. It still works for me.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 12 is half of:


1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 12 +
12 + 11 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1
or half of (12 times 13).

I used a similar shortcut:
12+(11+1)+(10+2)+(9+3)+(8+4)+(7+5)+6=12x6+6=78

13/13. I worked backwards through the questions, it was easier remembering the song.

Though I like some of the funny choices; we could make a new version of the song...
