Found this on Above Top Secret. NO, I do not visit that site like ever. I did a Google search for something and got a promising result from there.
Are people in general this clueless about basic astronomy??

Sadly I'd have to say yes.

Another example :
My brother who is well educated and now in his 70's. We were talking about the Earth's moon a few weeks ago and he floored me by saying that the phases of the moon were from the Earth's shadow on it. My jaw dropped....

That seems like a pretty common misconception, so I wouldn't be so surprised. Another one I hear a lot is that the astronauts on the ISS are weightless because they are far from the earth and the gravity can't reach.
