This is the year that Vostochny space center should become operational but they do have a few hurdles to get through before that happens.


During 2015, the construction of the first launch pad at Russia's newest space center was scheduled to be completed to host the first launch of the Soyuz rocket before the end of the year. Given the enormous amount of already finished and yet-to-be completed work, as well as previous experience with similar projects, it would be a remarkable achievement for Russian workers and engineers. In the meantime, the Russian government and its well-trained press continued talking about "threats to the construction deadlines established by the president," like something irreversible would happen if these unrealistic expectations did not come true.

The Vostochny space center will need an airport to support its operations. That will be the Vostochny airport. Planned to be operational in 2015 but now the date is ????.


The importance of the airport for Vostochny Cosmodrome is hard to underestimate. With the extremely remote location of Russia's future space center (six time zones away from Moscow), air travel will be crucial for the access to the site for personnel and cargo from the European part of Russia. At the same time, the closest major airport to Vostochny is now in Blagoveshensk, more than 150 kilometers away from Uglegorsk, the main residential area of the space center. The only alternatives are the Ukrainka strategic bomber base, some 70 kilometers away and a small air strip near Svobodny, 30 kilometers away, which can only receive small fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters. Not surprisingly, with the launch of the Vostochny project in 2007, the Russian government promised to build a 21st century airport right at the site.

The passenger area will feature a terminal built in the shape of bat and capable of processing 300 passengers per hour, including 50 passengers per hour at its international counter.
That doesn't sound like a large airport. About the size of a regional airport here. But; given it's only supporting other operations, I guess that's not bad.

The experts of Roscosmos’s contractor organizations have finished the assembly of Soyuz-2 carrier rocket launch system at Vostochny cosmodrome one month ahead of the schedule and performed the first commissioning.


In particular, they have checked the operability of the electrohydraulic equipment and metal constructions, the sensors and the terminal switches have been set up. The supporting service towers of the top chord, holding the carrier rocket before the launch, have been brought together and folded back for the first time.

The object’s commissioning was performed by the launch system developer, FSUE TsENKI division NIISK, electric equipment developer FSUE TsENKI division TsENKI North-West, hydraulic equipment developer Sigal research institute (Kovrov city), TsENKI-North, representatives of the Tyazhmash launch system manufacturer, ST-1 assembly organization, and FSUE TsENKI division NIISK operation department. The tests were carried out successfully and without irregularities.

Progress being made in the construction of Russia's new space port. They have their own mission control center. It is known as Vostochny Command and Measurement Point or VKIP.


The Vostochny Command and Measurement Point, VKIP, serves as a part of the Complex for Measurement, Gathering and Processing of Information or KSISO. It includes all the facilities for radar and optical tracking of launches, processing of telemetry, predicting of flight trajectories and keeping accurate timing of missions.

According to original plans, Site 9 hosting the VKIP station, would be situated on a hill, several kilometers northeast of the airport area. However, by the time the construction started in Vostochny, VKIP had to be moved much farther south, likely because its original area would remain undeveloped in the first phase of construction in Vostochny from 2012 to 2015, while a ground station was deemed necessary for the very first launch. As a result, Site 9 was moved to a hill located southwest of the launch facilities and adjacent to the main road of the center. The layout of the VKIP station nearly matched the perimeter of the abandoned silo for a Soviet-era ICBM, which used to be deployed at that location.

In addition to the VKIP ground station, Site 9 also accommodated an indoor car park and a civil defense emergency shelter with a total area of 2,200 square meters.

The main ground control building was accompanied by as many as 11 concrete towers for tracking and communications antennas and by a 85-meter-tall truss structure, which was nicknamed Eiffel Tower. It was reportedly designed for accurate calibration of ground control antennas.

According to Russian space officials, the single ground control station at Site 9 was designed to support all three launch facilities: the Soyuz pad; a dual Angara complex and the yet-to-be approved launch site for a super-heavy rocket.

Another first for Vostochny. Their will have a climate-controlled tower completely enclosing the Soyuz rocket before liftoff. No more having to brave winter cold and summer heat preparing Soyuz rockets for launch on open-air gantries like in Baikonur and Plesetsk.


Painted in elegant blue and white and standing almost 50 meters high, the Mobile Service Tower, MBO (for Mobilnaya Bashnya Obsluzhivaniya), is designed to provide personnel access to the Soyuz rocket during the countdown to liftoff from its launch pad in Vostochny. The structure can be also used to service the pad after launch and to process the rocket in case of an aborted liftoff.

With the tower in place, technicians can easily reach practically any part of the rocket as high as 37 meters above the surface of the launch pad. Internal access bridges of the tower surround the upper portion of the first and second stage, the third stage and the payload fairing.

Along with the rocket and the personnel, the tower also shelters several key systems of the Soyuz launch complex in Vostochny, which are open to the elements in Baikonur and Plesetsk, including the Service Cabin, a pair of fueling and umbilical gantries and four support truss structures.

The tower is expected to be compatible with three unmanned variants of the Soyuz rocket: Soyuz-2-1a, Soyuz-2-1b and Soyuz-2-1v. However, like some other launch hardware in Vostochny, the tower is not designed for the man-rated version of the Soyuz rocket, because the Russian space agency, Roskosmos, hoped to avoid flying human missions from Vostochny on the Soyuz spacecraft after the decision to bring the rocket to Vostochny had been made in 2011.

The famous "klyuch na start" (key to launch) command for Soyuz rockets in Vostochny will be given from a brand-new blockhouse sporting more-than-half-a-meter-thick walls. Located less than half a kilometer from the launch pad, the windowless structure will become the nerve center responsible for checking and monitoring of all key systems onboard the launch vehicle during the countdown and launch.


Replacing underground bunkers of Baikonur and Plesetsk, Facility No. 169 will house monitoring equipment and the personnel responsible for the countdown and launch of Soyuz rockets. Officially known as KP (from the Russian komandny punkt -- "command post"), the two-story building is situated at the south-west corner of the Soyuz launch complex, just 450 meters from the launch pad.

Like other facilities in Vostochny, the structure was designed to withstand an eight-point magnitude earthquake, however additionally, it is protected from a possible rocket explosion. The building was reported to have 60-centimeter walls and the 40-centimeter roof, both made of reinforced concrete. It required more than 12,000 cubic meters of concrete and 2,000 tons of metal. The roof took 2,050 cubic meters of concrete. The structure also features 10 blast-proof doors with a mass of nearly a ton each.

In addition to the launch control system developed at NPO Avtomatiki in Yekaterinburg, the launch control facility is also equipped with the Launch Manager Information System, which was newly developed at KB Spektr. It includes nine monitors displaying information on all phases of the countdown and launch. In particular, the center will be monitoring the condition and the amount of propellant onboard the vehicle. Also, the facility will contain the main control console for the fire suppression system of the Soyuz launch complex.

Russian space officials say they remain on target for the first unmanned launch from Vostochny in December this year. But plans for manned launches to commence in 2018 have been shelved, which means Russia will depend on Baikonur in Kazakhstan for another ten years.
Vostochny, in Amur region on the eastern fringe of Siberia, is the country's iconic new spaceport. It is currently Russia's largest building project, and the seven year delay appears to be a setback. I wonder if it has to do with the pad and tower.
I lost track of the A5 variants, but we had a discussion on the Angara thread about the A5 needing new facilities to handle the hydrogen upper stage.
I don't think the A5P (the manned variant) uses this stage because they say the spacecraft serves as the third stage, but I'm sure there's additional pad facilities needed for that too.

It will take 38 days for the Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket to reach Vostochny space center, according to the head of productions of the Progress rocket-space center.

The Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket has been sent from the manufacturer in the city Samara to the Vostochny space center for the launch, in a ceremony attended by Russian Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

"This is a very important event... we need our own civilian spaceport, and Soyuz opens this road up for us," Rogozin said.

Specifically for its use in Vostochny, the Soyuz-2 rocket was expected to get modest internal upgrades to enable the fueled vehicle to remain on the launch pad for up to 100 hours and to withstand the rigors of transportation of up to 10,000 kilometers. The rocket stages were expected travel by rail for around 6,600 kilometers from their manufacturing plant in Samara in Southern Russia to the Russian Far East.

Sounds about right, I was referencing Google directions per Squink's comment. Obviously; they optimized for time instead of distance. It get's a little dicey north of Mongolia. Obviously the rail is a more direct route.

Vladimir for Life Putin visited Russia’s delay- and scandal-plagued Vostochny spaceport on Wednesday and officially threw in the towel on the effort to launch a rocket from the Far East cosmodrome by the end of the year.

“We do not need any drumbeating reports, we need high-quality results,” Putin said. “So let us agree: you finish the work related to water supply and wastewater disposal. It is necessary to prepare spaceships for launches. And be ready to carry out the first launches in 2016, somewhere in the spring.”

“If you do that before Cosmonautics Day, that will be fine,” the president added.

The Soyuz launch pad at Vostochny has been completed. It is the 1st launch pad to be built. The next one to be built will be the launch pad to handle the Angara rockets.


A real winter came to Vostochny in the first half of November with temperatures dropping to minus 25C degrees. Fortunately, the construction at the Soyuz launch pad was finally completed with the last concrete poured into the surface of the flame duct by November 17.

By mid-December, the main propellant depot at the Soyuz launch complex received its first shipment of cryogenic liquid nitrogen, allowing initial trials of the fueling process. Other systems were also undergoing autonomous tests. On December 16, Spetsstroi promised to conclude all autonomous tests at the launch complex by the end of 2015, which would be followed by the delivery of the Soyuz-2 rocket to the pad on January 18, 2016, for integrated tests.

It is all hands on deck as Russia prepares for the 1st launch from it's future space port in Vostochny.


On January 18, 2016, a team of specialists from RKTs Progress, who are responsible for the assembly and testing of the Soyuz rocket in Baikonur, arrived at Russia's future space port in Vostochny to support the first launch campaign at the new site. The Soyuz-2-1a rocket intended for the maiden flight from Vostochny was finally unloaded from its transport containers on January 20, after its assembly building at the center's processing facility had received power via a permanent supply line, Roskosmos announced.

At the time, autonomous tests of the new launch facilities were scheduled to be completed by March 26, 2016, when the rocket would be rolled out to the launch pad for integrated tests.

Contingent on the success of all tests, the first launch from the new Russian space center could take place as early as the second half of April, the head of Roskosmos Igor Komarov said upon his inspection of the site on January 20.

More bad news for Vostochny space center. They will have only one launch pad instead of dual launch complex for the Angara rockets.

It is not as bad as it sounds as they only need the dual launch complex for the moon missions. The moon missions will require 4 or 5 launches of the Angara 5V rockets. As the manned moon missions have been postponed till 2035 they will have plenty of time to build the second one.


On January 20, 2016, Roskosmos officials admitted that budget cuts at the end of 2015 required to drop plans to build one of the two launch pads for Angara rockets in Vostochny. Previously, the Russian space officials claimed that a dual launch complex for the Angara was absolutely necessary to support the four-launch scenario of the lunar expeditions relying on the Angara-5V rocket.

The beginning of the construction of the remaining single pad was now delayed from 2016 to 2017.

On March 21, 2016, the first Soyuz-2 rocket with a Volga upper stage was rolled out to the launch pad in Vostochny, Roskosmos announced. The vehicle was transported from the assembly building to the launch facility and installed into vertical position. On the same day, the mobile service tower rolled onto the pad and enclosed the rocket, enabling the beginning of electric tests of the booster and its upper stage.

According to Roskosmos, the autonomous tests will continue on March 22 and the integrated tests will begin on the same day, followed by the withdrawal of the mobile service tower. It will clear the way for general tests of the launch vehicle with all the telemetry being downlinked to Vostochny's ground control station. The electromagnetic compatibility of the rocket with the launch facility will also be checked, as well as the fueling and umbilical mast retraction to test the launch operations.

On March 23, the personnel at Vostochny will perform fueling tests, simulating the loading of propellant onboard the rocket. Finally, on March 24, engineers will practice procedures during the aborted launch.

If all tests go as scheduled, the launch vehicle will be removed from the launch pad on March 25 and returned to its processing facility for the final assembly with its payloads, including Lomonosov, Aist-2D and Kontakt-Nanosputnik satellites, which will be delivered into orbit during the first mission from Vostochny. The State Commission overseeing the launch will be making decision on the date of the first liftoff based on the results of the tests, the readiness of the launch facilities and the completion of safety measures for the launch personnel, Roskosmos said.

Vostochny prepares for its first launch at the end of the month but it will only be symbolic. The new spaceport is expected to remain largely unused until at least 2018. The article has a nice picture of the Soyuz 2.1a on the launch pad I think.


As of beginning of 2016, the total price tag for the first phase of Vostochny was expected to reach 120 billion rubles with nine billion to be spent during that year to finish the first phase of spaceport infrastructure that would not be necessary for the first launch, RIA Novosti quoted Roskosmos head Igor Komarov as saying. These additional facilities included a centralized propellant storage complex, the second phase of an industrial zone, a meteorological facility, communications and new residential infrastructure. Some work would include preparations for clean-up efforts at drop zones for spent rocket stages downrange from Vostochny.

The development of facilities in the first phase of construction was expected to continue well into 2017, overlapping with early work on the second phase. According to the Spetsstroi military construction agency, the future development would require a new concrete production plant, a hotel, several makeshift camps for up to 1,000 extra workers, a canteen, a laboratory and new earth-moving and road-construction equipment.

Good news for Vostochny but bad news for moon fans. The good news is all Russian flights to the moon will be from Vostochny but if you read the previous report I posted above there will be no moon shots to at least 2018.

Russia will stop using the Soviet-era Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for lunar launches, according to Russian-based Rocket and Space Corporation (RSC Energia).

Moscow made the decision to shift all operations linked to Russia's moon mission to the Vostochny cosmodrome, the company behind the program said Monday.

"All further works to implement the lunar program, including a flight around the moon and a moon landing will take place after 2025. All launches will take place at the Vostochny cosmodrome," RSC Energia General Designer Yevgeny Mikrin said.

Rocketcam video released from Soyuz launch last month


The imagery shows the Soyuz rocket lifting off from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on April 28 and rolling on a course north-northwest from the partially-built spaceport in Russia’s eastern Amur region near the Chinese border.

A downward-facing camera recorded a dramatic view of the forested cosmodrome receding in the distance as the Soyuz quickly raced through the speed of sound and rocketed into the stratosphere. Roads crisscrossing the launch site are punctuated by rocket and satellite preparation facilities and other partially-built structures at the multibillion-dollar cosmodrome.

The Soyuz-2.1a rocket’s four strap-on liquid-fueled boosters jettison in a slow-motion sequence in the video released Monday by Roscosmos, the Russian space agency. The spent kerosene-fueled engines spin away from the launcher’s core, or second stage, at the two-minute point of the flight.

The rocketcam video then skips ahead to show the near-simultaneous ignition of the Soyuz rocket’s third stage RD-0110 engine and separation of the core stage. About seven seconds later, aerodynamic panels that connected the second and third stages fall away from the rocket.

The final scene in the video shows the Soyuz third stage releasing the Volga upper stage and its satellite passengers in space. The Volga later fired its engine twice to inject the three spacecraft into orbit.

Russian space agency Roscosmos expects the construction of the Vostochny Cosmodrome to be completed by the end of 2016, Roscosmos General Director Igor Komarov said Friday.

"We must solve all remaining issues in the nearest future to accelerate the completion of construction and finish it by year-end," Komarov told Rossiya-24.

Vostochny, which has been under construction since 2012, is expected to reduce Russia's dependency on the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan. Baikonur is on lease to Russia until 2050.

In April, Russia successfully conducted the first launch from the newly-built Vostochny space center, putting three satellites aboard a Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket to orbit.
