View Full Version : Mini-Moon !!! - Thursday 2015 MAR 05

The popular media appear to be ignoring the upcoming Mini-Moon. The Full Moon of 2015 MAR 05 (utilizing the official astronomical date format 15/03/05 is the abbreviated alternative) will subtend the smallest angular diameter of any Full Moon this year, since it will occur while near the apogee of its orbit. Why no hyperbole from the press like we get with the so-called Super-Moons? ;)

All kidding aside, the Moon will appear most fully illuminated on that date during midday for North Americans, while well beneath the horizon. As viewed from Chicago the Full Moon will rise on Thursday at 17:58 CST. At that time its apparent disk will be 99.87% illuminated with an angular diameter of a puny 29.41 arcminutes.

For my graphic previewing all Full Moons seen worldwide this year, and a timetable with data for Full Moon risings for Chicago, you are invited to visit my Moon webpage: www.CurtRenz.com/moon.html

Photos and descriptions of the upcoming Mini-Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. :)

We only like big things, not little things. The fast food worker never asks you if you'd like to "sub-size" those fries. :D
