Is it correct that there is no theoretical reason why a 65 mile tall building with its very wide hollow base (http://www.citylab.com/design/2012/08/there-limit-how-tall-buildings-can-get/2963/) on the Earth and its spire dipping in to atmosphereless outerspace could not be built?

I would think the weight of such a structure would compress the crust of the planet. In the article you link to, they propose a building as tall as Everest plus one meter. That is 8,848 meters or 29,029 feet. You'd need something 59.5 miles taller to get to the Karman Line.
