A volcano in the Galapagos Islands has erupted, potentially threatening wildlife on the biggest island of the Pacific archipelago.

The Wolf Volcano, which is one of the most active among the islands, erupted early Monday, according to the Galapagos National Park Twitter feed.

The eruption at the mile-high volcano on Isabela Island is not a threat to human habitation but it is a danger to a unique species of pink iguana that makes the island home, the officials said.

However, the National Park agency said that the lava is flowing down the southern side of the volcano and that most of the rare species live on the other side of the volcano from where the deadly flows are running.
