Well, we could try alternate forms of intercity transport. There is no reason -- other than up-front costs -- why a 300+ kph train service couldn't be made between most US city pairs. Obviously, it would be tough to include Honolulu in those pairs, but Chicago-Detroit, Seattle-San DIego, and the like would not require anything except money. Fast trains are pretty much ubiquitous in densely populated industrialized countries, but the US prefers those idiotic highways.
