View Full Version : Moon Occults Aldebaran - Predawn Thanksgiving

2015-Nov-17, 03:51 AM
The Full Moon will occult the first magnitude star Aldebaran in Taurus for observers in the northern half of North America during the predawn hours of Thanksgiving Thursday 2015 NOV 26.

Immersion will occur on the lunar bright limb and emersion on the dark limb of a Moon just beginning to wane during the hours after maximum fullness. The southern graze path will cross the USA from the Oregon-California border to South Carolina. That will include passage through the Salt Lake City and Denver areas. The nominally “northern” graze path will be across the North Pole in Siberia. Observers on a graze path will witness the star winking on and off as lunar hills and valleys pass by. Observers between the two graze paths will see a full occultation.

I’ve created a graze map, preview graphic with data ideally for observers at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium, and a set of Besselian elements. They can be seen at www.CurtRenz.com/occultations.html

Photos and descriptions of the event would be welcome additions to this thread. If you would like specific occultation or graze predictions for your location, please reply to this post with your longitude, latitude, elevation and time zone.

Don't forget to send a postcard. :)

The Thanksgiving morning lunar occultation of Aldebaran will be the 12th in a series of 49 Aldebaran occultations separated by about 27.3 days (a sidereal month). The centers of Aldebaran occultation series are separated by 18.6 years. The current series commenced on 2015 JAN 29 and will conclude on 2018 SEP 03. The following series will commence on 2033 AUG 18.

Each occultation is only visible from within a particular band that progresses across the Earth, similar to the case of a solar eclipse. Those of us north of a graze path crossing the USA will be the lucky ones this time. www.CurtRenz.com/occultations.html
