It’s nearly time for my monthly New Moon spotting challenge. Sighting a young Moon becomes easier as we approach the time of the vernal equinox. Many North Americans should be able to spot the more than a day old Moon on Tuesday evening February 9.

Photos and descriptions of the young crescent Moon this month would be welcome additions to this thread.

Below is a photo that I shot from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Moon aged 31 hours on 2009 MAR 27 at 19:52 CDT. It was in the form of a U-shaped “Lunar Boat” which is unusual outside of the tropics.
