Would like a resource for 7th grade students to find astronomy related science fair projects.

Here's an idea…

Back in 2002, I earned my Lunar Certificate through the Astronomical League (https://www.astroleague.org/al/obsclubs/lunar/lunar1.html). One of the optional activities for this certificate is estimating the height of a lunar mountain (https://www.astroleague.org/al/obsclubs/lunar/lunar2.html then scroll to the bottom of the page; it's #2 under Optional Activities|Telescope).

I used the recommended Mons Piton and I measured it on two different nights using a 5" telescope. As I recall, my better result was about 10% off of the correct height, which I didn't think was too bad. I have yet to try this with my 8" telescope, but it's on this summer's to-do list.

There are equations involved and the equations contain trig functions. However, a smart 7th grader can easily learn the definitions of sin, cos, and tan with a properly annotated right triangle, even if they don't understand all of the uses of these functions.

If you want to see the calculations involved, I have posted my them on the PTC Mathcad community here: https://www.ptcusercommunity.com/docs/DOC-4682 The .zip file include a Mathcad Prime 3.0 worksheet and an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file.

It's possible that some of the other Astronomical League observing programs has similar science-fair-worthy activities, but I can't think of any at the moment.

One other thing…I did a Google search for "astronomy activities for middle school" and got lots of hits.
