I just got my 'new' laptop working today. It has immense power!

32Mb Ram
528Mb of hard disk space
SVGA graphics
Win 98

With this laptop my plans for world domination will be completed!

Now in all seriousness the java script to insert an emotion the thing has to think. Whats even better is i got this laptop for my writing, but half the time i'm waiting for the buffer to empty because i'm typing too fast for it. Also my typing managed to crash, yes crash the OS.

QWERTY fixed type writer jams but it's not helping with my laptop

No one worry, i didn't spend any money on it :)

Fire it up in DOS mode and use an old text WP like Protext. You can easily fit files on a floppy disk and then load into Word or whatever on your main PC.

I used to love my old Protext 4, no bells whistles or bloat although it did have a spellcheck. I used green text on a black background which was very restfull on the eyes. Even better, the prog was free on a computer mag.

Edit: still available Protext Home Page (http://home.btconnect.com/tigerteam/protext/)

Protext v4.3

Earlier version of Protext for PCs with no hard disk or with only 512K RAM.
PC only: 49.99

Had to blink at that  512K RAM :o Yes, you could actually run it off the floppy.

32 Mb is a little tight. If you'd had 64 Mb, I'd have recommended BeatrIX (http://www.watsky.net/).

As it is, I'd have to go for Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/). That thing has run on a 486SX33 with 16 Mb, so you should have a breeze

Seriously, it might be a better option than Win98 on that equipment. I think DSL can be booted from a CD, so you might test it without throwing away your old install. I know for a fact that BeatrIX can, at least, but it's a little too large for you.
