Does it not depend on why the variation is occurring?

Do we know enough yet?

The "official" variable star designations, such as RR Lyr or V1404 Cyg, are assigned by a team of astronomers at Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Institute of Astronomy Russian Academy of Sciences. You can read about them at

http://www.sai.msu.su/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs/

They are a few people, trying to keep up with an ever-increasing number of discoveries. They try to verify the properties of each star, which are often mentioned only briefly (if at all) by the groups which discover them and note them to be variable.

The GCVS team has a big backlog, but they are doing their best.

I was noticing the limestone world that was breaking up: http://www.space.com/33177-limestone-planet-consumed-by-dying-star.html
There may have been life on that world. I wonder if limestone might be better than comet debris at blocking starlight.
