View Full Version : A new dwarf planet - 2015 RR245

Fraser has reported about the discovery of a new dwarf planet in "Universe Today" (http://cosmoquest.org/forum/showthread.php?161881-New-Dwarf-Planet-Discovered-Beyond-Neptune). I am highlighting it here as some of you might have missed it.

It is thought to be about 700 km in size. Smaller than dwarf planet Ceres. At this point it appears to have a 700 year orbit around the Sun. What I could not yet find is, any reference, if it's orbit is influenced by Planet 9.

Thanks. I rarely look there, so I do appreciate something significant mentioned here. There being the UT forum, not the location of 2015 RR245.

Despite what most reports say, it's not actually a dwarf planet until the IAU says it is. There's several potential dwarf planets already known, but they haven't declared any new ones since the initial 5. My guess is that they haven't created a process for doing so, perhaps because they realize that it's a fairly useless category.

And nowhere near New Horizon's path no doubt...
