English dramatic and comedy actress Liz Smith has died age 96.

Best was best known for her later comedy roles in comedies like Vicar of Dibley and Royle Family but started her career in theatre.
Her film breakthrough came in 1970 in the Mike Leigh film Bleak Moments playing the downtrodden mother.
She was also in Last of the Summer Wine, The Sweeney, The Duchess of Duke Street and The Gentle Touch, The Life and Loves Of A She Devil, A Private Function, 2point4 Children, Lovejoy, Bottom and Peter Greenaways The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.
Her later roles included parts in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Lark Rise to Candleford, and she was the voice of Mrs Mulch in Wallace & Gromit -The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
