"The next transit of Mercury [across the sun] will happen ... 11 Nov 2019 starting 12:35 and ending 18:04. There will then be a 13 year gap until the next transit on 13 November 2032, followed by 7 Nov 2039 and 7 May 2049."

I have often glanced unawares at the sky and seen Venus shining high and bright in the evening or morning sky. You can hardly miss Venus when it's around, but I've never seen Mercury without deliberately setting out to look for it.

So, not as often, but I've seen Mercury in the sky many times without deliberately setting out to look for it. You just gotta look at the sky a lot.

It was viewing the Transit of Mercury of 7 November 1677 that astronomer Edmond Halley realised that planetary transits could be used to measure the Earth’s distance from the Sun.

I've created a webpage for the 2019 Mercury transit. It's a work in progress. Specific data with graphics are currently listed for only a few cities, but many more will be added by next year.

BTW, the 2019 transit will be visible in North America, but not those of 2032 or 2039. The one in 2049 will be seen here, when I'm 103. ;)

I continue to update my webpage for upcoming Mercury transits of the Sun. It now displays geocentric charts for the next four transits, along with maps indicating worldwide visibility. For the 2019 NOV 11 (official astronomical date format) transit, I've added more cities with charts based on both equatorial and horizontal coordinates. I'll keep adding more cities. City requests will be given consideration, if made within this thread. :cool:

Well, Raleigh is already on the list. How much trouble for Denver CO, Billings MT, Sheridan WY? The last two should be kinda similar, right? :)

For Billings and Sheridan, below is the info. At both locations Mercury and the Sun will rise during the transit.

Billings
07:10:26 MST - Mercury Rises
08:20:24 MST - Least Angular Separation - 74 arcseconds
11:02:51 MST - Contact 3
11:04:32 MST - Contact 4

Sheridan
07:01:37MST - Mercury Rises
08:20:24 MST - Least Angular Separation - 74 arcseconds
11:02:51 MST - Contact 3
