View Full Version : The Sun Has a Dark Side

Knowledge of the local star gives us a model to compare with other stars, so getting it right locally helps astronomers in general. One of the things they measure is the relative abundances of the isotopes making up the sun by spectroscopy. It seems that the abundance of oxygen, the third most common element in the universe, has fluctuated in value for quite a while between two camps of thought by a factor of about 2, similar to the fluctuating value of the Hubble constant in the previous decades. The author proposes that a difference in opacity due to trace metals, and particularly iron might resolve the point. SEE:https://arxiv.org/abs/1804.03746
