In the Armoring a radiator (https://forum.cosmoquest.org/showthread.php?169955-Armoring-a-radiator) thread, there was a post (https://forum.cosmoquest.org/showthread.php?169955-Armoring-a-radiator&p=2461807#post2461807) about Quantum Cascade Lasers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_cascade_laser), suggesting that a spacecraft's hull could be imbedded with laser generating material.

My question is, could such a material also be designed to act as photovoltaic cells? They are both made of layered semiconductors, but perform essentially the exact opposite functions. Is it possible to make a "switchable" material? Or alternate the type of quantum wells in a pattern, or something?
