just a kind of silly question
I was watching the old cartoon series StarBlazers
during the intro the person says they have to travel 148k ly to some planet and back to earth in 1 year
just how fast would the ship have to be traveling to go that distance in that time?

296,000 times the speed of light, assuming instant acceleration and turnaround. Is this more or less ridiculous than flying a refitted battleship through space? I dunno.

Or about 0.999999999994 times the speed of light, allowing for time dilation aboard the spaceship

Of course, the friends you left behind will be fossilized....

Is that average speed, or cruising speed?

I guess star blazers use both warp and weft?

Warped drive.

Iím guessing that itís the average speed.

I think the range of answers is that you didnít specify whether you meant a year on earth or on the spaceship. If you mean the former, itís impossible. If you mean the latter, itís theoretically possible.

It is less impressive than refitting a battleship for space, in my mind, anyway.

Average. It’s possible I miscounted the nines.

Non-"instant acceleration" is probably something that needs to be considered.

Hopefully, we transcend today's Relativity and learn enough about time to allow a paraphrase of Magee's High Flight, such as...

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of spacetime,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Onward to Andromeda I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of star-split nebulae, --and done a thousand things
You have not dreamed of ..."

As I recall the 70s exported to US anime version of Star Blazers, there was some element of time manipulation involved in warp (FTL) travel, symbolized/indicated by a montage that included grazing sauropods.
[eta] And "cavemen".

Time travel! I hope they don't meet a certain call box in the Warp. Or should I say, in the WORP WORP WORP

In our warp where time and space are one
We can no longer see the sun
In fact there's nothing there for us to see
For light is nowhere near as fast as we

Now the earth is just beginning to learn of our existence
All life in space must learn to live as one
Maybe now is the time for friendship with out neighbors
For our planet is the second from the sun

Around the universe in eighty days
Sit down I think you'll like it out in space
There's nothing left to stop us now
We're sure to win the race

in the cosmic loom of warp and weft,
there's very little writing left,
nor righting of the left bereft,

the pattern is becoming clear
it matters if there's matter near
the grains of time are woven here.

to some it seems that light is fast
but all that light is in the past
ahead is darkness, overcast.
