Sci Fi? Not a physicist. Could a near sun orbiter/power collector drive the phased lasers thru some kind of conversion process utilizing a very large parabolic? Solar collector focused on a "converter" powering the laser? The near sun power supply being in an orbit giving a best solution to the powering and "aiming" problem? Aren't we just trying to convert broad spectrum radiation (Sun) to a narrow band (laser) for the "driven" part, the receiver and lithium ion drives? Do we have that kind of "conversion" tech? (other than the usual solar cell making electricity type) Naturally the closer you can get to the Sun without an equipment meltdown, the greater the energy density received by the collector and the smaller it would need to be... saving on materials needed.
