View Full Version : From the Director's Keyboard: CosmoQuest: New Year, New Us [2021-01-18]

I have spent the majority of my life on the academic calendar. For me, the year starts somewhere around Labor Day with classes. The mid-point comes at the end of the conference season (which everyone else calls "the Holidays") with the glorious MLK Jr holiday weekend. Now the mad rush of meetings is behind me, and I spent my weekend looking ahead. (Seriously - I set up a new planner and everything.) None of us can know what 2021 is going to bring, so I am deciding that for me, there is going to be a concerted effort to get my head back into software and design.

2020 was supposed to be the epic CosmoQuest (https://cosmoquest.org/x/) rebuild. Bennu mapping was behind us, and it was safe to take everything down for a bit to rebuild from the ground up. Then last year, when I came back from the AAS (https://aas.org/) meeting, I found myself spending my MLK Jr weekend d00mscrolling about a new virus emerging that appeared to be airborne and deadly.

2020 ate my creativity, and there was no epic rebuild. Like all of you, I have gone through the phases of despair, loneliness, anger, d00mscrolling, anxiety, binging Netflix (https://www.netflix.com/), playing mobile/computer games, and eating everything that doesn't try and kill me (and inadvertently a few things that did try and kill me). [Ed. note: The former list is shorter.]

We all had to mourn what we didn't experience in 2020. We all had plans that were cancelled, dreams that we lost. Our worlds shrank. Too many people lost jobs, lost loved ones, lost themselves into the d00m. I'm so grateful that we had each other: when we all leaned in, no one could fall down.

As I look ahead to 2021, I have no plans other than to try to sleep better and drink more non-caffeinated liquids (really). Beyond that, what the world gives me will be good enough. And I'm hoping what it gives me is a space to be creative again.

Starting this week, I'm going to be laying out a plan for our CosmoQuest website relaunch. I'm talking a page from Woody Zuill (https://woodyzuill.com/) and not estimating time, just laying out a plan. You are all invited to join me and the CosmoQuest team as we work to innovate on what we have and grow into the future. We'll do what we can on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/cosmoquestx) and do a lot more in Discord (https://discord.gg/r57VVvzknv). I'll be working random hours; my time is split across projects.

Together, let's see if we can make something better, one line at a time.
