I posted this elsewhere only for the moderator to post this

Er, I'm not going to click on THAT! Who knows what it might do? .swf files are notorious for spreading viruses.

Should we be posting links to .swf files if this is the case? :-?

I have yet to see a virus spread by a shockwave flash file.

I have no idea where you got that from.

The Moderator on another forum said it was so, and as he builds forums and knows the dark arts of such, I assumed he was a higher level Computer Techie than I

Well, you can't. Its like a fancy jpeg.

People build entire sites out of flash.

Popups requesting stuff to download is possible, but that requires you to hit yes.

If shockwave/flash files spread viruses, the internet would be a whole heap o' trouble.

A .swf file can carry a virus, but you need Macromedia's Flash Player for it to be installed IIRC. The Flash plugin for Firefox won't cause trouble, as far as I know.

=D>

Re the virus thing...if we were that vulnerable, wouldn't one possibly get a virus by clicking on any number of web sites or forums? Could someone get a virus from a link someone posts here?

This was only a problem if you had the stand alone flash player. It didn't affect browser plugins.

It was resolved 3 years ago.
