Pffft. That's nothing. Look at this egg (http://www.calmit.unl.edu/jhlady/pysanka_vegreville.jpg). Now that must have been hard to balance.

I don't think that counts. It has to be "on end".

And it was still a trick to get it to stand up. The texture in the bottom of the frying pan helped much less than I thought it would.

I see. Well done.

I also see the bowl of eggs off to the left. How many did you have to go through? :)

Lance
2005-Jul-06, 02:26 PM
It just took the one. We suffered no casualties. All the other eggs in the bowl trembled in fear as they saw their comrade brought so close to the brink so many times, only to be allowed to recover slightly and go through it all again.

Seriously though; About a half hour before doing it, I turned a half-dozed or so "fat side down" in the bowl to give the yolks a chance to settle. Egg-balanceing attemps often fail because the balancer doesn't have the patience to wait for the yolk to settle to the bottom before trying to get the egg to stay. Turning a few up like that gave me a good head start.

I finally did it! Three Grade-A Jumbo eggs are standing on my counter, and I've named them Moe, Larry and Curly. :P

Ok, Lance, I didn't scare them with the frying pan, but my cat was on the counter meowing for the first one, which came quickly (I left them out for a while as they had all been turned on their pointy ends in the box). The second one within 10 minutes, the third took longer, but I really wanted a balanced trio going, so I stuck with it...all in all 20 minutes.

Of course, I don't have a digital camera, so Moe, Larry and Curly will have to wait a bit for their BABB debut. Unfortunately, this is probably the most exciting thing that's happened all week. 8-[ Now I'm just waiting for my Devil-cat to bat them over.

Edit add: It occured to me that Curly should have some hair, so I put cotton on his head. Maybe that's a new twist. :P

And Larry now has the hat from the Monopoly game. I don't know what to do with Moe, though. :-k

Moe is now multi-colored, and streaked with food coloring, which I dropped on his head.

No, no. Curly is the one without any hair. Moe should have a Dutchboy/Beatle cut, and Larry's the one for the frizzy stuff.

BTW, digital camera prices continue to plummet. Just saw a 3+ megapixel for $40 something at a local store.

Pardon me, while I continue to chuckle about The Walrus Egg Company.

Absolutely! Here's a quick Stooges Primer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Stooges) from Wikipedia

I must admit it's quite tricky to get an egg to do a "sit, stay", "Oh, a wise guy egg" is all I seem to get (slapping has no effect). I'm just not patient enough I guess!

Well, duhhhh, Mak, I know Curly is the one without the hair--I grew up watching the Three Stooges, but these are eggs! I just named them that, because at 1:30 am that's the first trio I came up with. :P One of them is multi-colored, besides, so who would that fit? And none wore a Monopoly-piece hat! Geesh, some people have to be sooooo particular. (Just kidding) :D **

I guess I could get a cheap, cheap digital, like my cheap Nikon I reserve for when I don't want to carry my big Pentax SLR around. Sounds like a plan--will go to Best Buy today while I get printer ink. Plus, I need a scanner. I had to take the eggs down, because the food coloring puddle was staining my counter and Devil-cat pushes everything off the counter, like my keys, and such. Will try to develop before I fly off Monday morning. :D

Edit add: (**)You know, you'd think you'd just congragulate me on my 3-Jumbo-egg-standing--this is a major accomplishment in life, you know.

I myself prefer the 'Columbus' method of balancing an egg. (At least, the story I heard said it was Columbus who did it.)

There are two steps to the C method.
Step one: Lightly tap the end of the egg, denting it, but not letting any yolk out.
Step two: Place dented end of Egg on flat surface.

Ta-Da!

Oh, and about Canadians and large sculptures, Somewhere, out in the prairies, has the worlds largest statue of a mosquito.
St. Thomas, which is fairly close to me, has a life-sized statue of a circus elephant, Jumbo. Jumbo was not from St. Thomas, Jumbo never even performed at St. Thomas, no, Jumbo died at St. Thomas. So of course St. Thomas gets to make a life-sized statue of him. (Which a few years ago turned Pink when a new layer of primer was applied, it is now back to it's normal grey colour though *sigh*)

I think that's all the proof we need that Canadians like large sculptures. :P

I got Moe, Larry and Curly developed. OK, I know Phil has 7 eggs standing in his book, but at least my three had some flair, and it was late in the morn.

The progression:

One egg...

Three eggs...(yes, my cat killed that bamboo stalk; there were three, and now there is one, which is yellow and effectively dead)
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/3762/3739801r1053254gz.th.jpg (http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=3739801r1053254gz.jpg)

Three Stoogeggs (though an incorrect representation as noted above)!
http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/7349/3749011r102812a4ka.th.jpg (http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=3749011r102812a4ka.jpg)

This looks like a product-placement ad. Moe left a messy multi-colored puddle (I only use Fantastik, great for pet regurgitation stains).

No, I really don't like frightening them - I just embarrass my eggs by dressing them up. I'll have to wait for July...seems like a good balancing month for me.
