SUMMARY: Columbia accident investigators fired a chunk of foam at a sample wing of the space shuttle on Monday, and managed to knock out a 40 centimetre hole. The investigators believe this is the "smoking gun" that proves how events led to the destruction of the space shuttle in February. The impact was so strong that it damaged some of the sensors designed to measure the damage. The board has already made preliminary recommendations about how NASA can improve its policies to reduce risks to the shuttle in the future, but their full report is due later this month.

Well, I think its amazing that a little bit of foam can bring down an entire shuttle and eventually kill all on board, but I guess this is an example of the butterfly effect in action.

This isn't your run-of-the-mill styrofoam packaging material. It's an incredibly stable and dense product designed to prevent the buffeting of the metal in the rockets from extreme temperatures in the atmosphere. If someone were to drop it on your head from a height of several meters, it would in all likelihood kill you instantly, or render you horribly injured.

As for the "smoking gun", I don't know. I seriously doubt we'll ever know definitively- this is just something that government investigators just do to feel more at ease with themselves (think the investigation of TWA 800 that blew up shortly after taking off a few years ago). More impressive would be if one of the alleged geniuses at NASA figured out how to launch a heavy rocket without the need for such foam.
