I'm confused, what is up with these ranks? Like i'm a 'Newly Joined'. I've noticed that their is other's too. How do you become a 'Contributer' or an 'Admidistrator' ?

Locke
2003-Aug-24, 04:41 AM
 Is your question answered now that your a contributor?

Locke

Fraser
2003-Aug-24, 07:28 AM
There are a few ranks based on the number of posts that people make. Only I get "administrator". :-) But there are a series of new ranks as people make more posts. I think it's newly joined until 10 or so and then Contributor and then there are a few more at higher levels, but I don't think anyone's gotten there yet.

1) do you really have 700 plus posts?
2) When is Enthusiast?

Josh
2003-Sep-16, 01:30 AM
It would seem "Enthusiast" is somewhere around here.

Fraser
2003-Sep-16, 08:32 PM
Well, my number of posts is a little bit skewed. My "Discuss this Story" feature automatically creates a new thread in the forum for every story I create for Universe Today. So, most of the threads I've done are because of that. I'm pretty sure I've got the most posts, though.

I'm not sure when "enthusiast" kicks in, but there are a few more secret levels up there. I guess you'll have to keep posting to find out what they are. :-)

Deep_Eye

Incentive.....
I think enthusiast comes around 100....I'm halfway there!

Deep_Eye
2003-Sep-17, 11:14 PM
Kashi, you're one of two "enthusiast" ranked people I've seen, I can't remember the other one. Fraser is being mean (lol) and won't say when you reach the entusiast level. Do you happen to remember when that was? My guess is somewhere around 100....(trying to see if getting carple-tunnel will be worth it)
And Fraser only has 3 blocks by his name and 830 some posts. If you need more than to reach the 4th level then....

While I'm new I thought I'd "contribute" this....

It's a long way to the next level after "enthusiast", though. Pace yourselves.

Deep_Eye
2003-Sep-18, 09:45 PM
Guessing by the number of posts you have Fraser, and the fact that you still have 3 bars, I think that the level after Enthusiast hits at 1000. That'll take ages.....

Josh
2003-Sep-19, 01:38 AM
You certainly are trying though...

Fraser
2003-Sep-19, 03:48 AM
Okay, the only other level is "Expert Contributor" and that's at 1000. If you guys want to suggest different levels or titles, I'm happy to modify them. :-)

Hmmm I think the next level should be at like 500..... I dunno though. How about "Finatic" or "OPS" (obsessive posting syndrome) as a level? Expert contributor sounds kind of strange I think....

Deep_Eye
2003-Sep-19, 12:29 PM
Josh, where did you get your quote thats at the bottom of your posts? It sounds like something from the book "Ender's Game."

Josh

Hello there mr obsessive compulsive poster ...

It is a quote from a star trek DS9 episode.

kashi
2003-Sep-19, 01:17 PM
How about we name a posting level after "deep_eye" himself.

People shouldn't post just for the sake of increasing their ranking. It is sad, and fills the forum with bulk rather than quality.

Kashi

Fraser

So maybe just remove the ranks altogether?

Deep_Eye
2003-Sep-20, 01:19 AM
No, the ranks are good I think......But yeah I sort of did get carried away.
Thanks Josh, it just sounded like something I'd read.

Well I'm the next closest to the century mark, so I''l have a look see at number 100, and come back here for number 101 and let you all know if I made the next rank at 100. :P

Planetwatcher
2003-Sep-21, 04:30 AM
Okay guys, my last posting was no 97, I was still contributer, at 100 it went to the next higher rank, This one is 101 and my last one for tonight. Bye...

2003-Sep-23, 09:05 AM
So we shouldn't post for the sake of increasing our post #'s?
OK...I won't do that then....

Seriously... to rank or not? It's fun and it keeps us here reading and writing (even if some of us need work on spelling/grammar) which keeps our heads working.
It's all good.. :P

DippyHippy
2003-Sep-26, 05:11 AM
I love ranks LOL But then I suffer from that Obsessive Compulsive Poster Disorder thingy LOL

As for rankings here... the only thing I would do is perhaps make it astronomy orientated... like a newbie would be an asteroid... then a moon... then a planet... then a star... then a star cluster... then a nebula... then a galaxy... then a galaxy cluster... then a universe in their own right...

...or something LOL

Dips

Planetwatcher
2003-Sep-29, 03:31 AM
Hey Dippy, how about these rankings? B)

dust specs, metorites, metors, asteroids, Kupier objects, terrestial planets, gas giant planets, neutron stars, pulsers, black holes, dwarf stars, mainstream stars, giant stars, supergiant stars, white holes, quazars, galaxies, galaxy clusters, clusters of galaxy clusters, and the whole universe, and finally Frasier, :P
followed by God. :o

LOL ;)

DippyHippy
2003-Sep-29, 03:44 AM
 LOL Okay Mr Pedantic, you win LOL

Fraser
2003-Sep-29, 03:28 PM
I like that. :-) If God wants an admin account, he's going to have to ask me.

What number of posts would be appropriate, do you think?

Planetwatcher
2003-Oct-01, 08:18 AM
To Dips, What is Pedantic? Never heard that term before.

To Fraiser. More zeros behind that one then any of us can count.
I would not want to be his switchboard operator, or web page manager. :)

I hope I got em all in the correct order, of size that is. ;)

DippyHippy
2003-Oct-05, 12:19 AM
Planetwatcher, "pedantic" means nit-picking, basically. Someone is pedantic when they're being needlessly precise about something. Don't worry, I was just mucking around :)

How about...

0 = Dust Speck
1 = Meteor (meteors come before meteorites because they're much much smaller... just grains of sand, really. Now who's being pedantic, eh? :D)
10 = Meteorite
25 = Asteroid
50 = Kuiper Belt Object
100 = Terrestrial Planet
150 = Gas Giant
200 = Nebula
300 = Neutron Star
500 = Pulsar
750 = Black Hole
1,000 = Dwarf Star
1,250 = Main Sequence Star
1,500 = Giant Star
2,000 = Supergiant Star
3,000 = Star Cluster
5,000 = White Hole
7,500 = Quasar
10,000 = Galaxy
12,500 = Galaxy Cluster
15,000 = Universe

:D

Fraser

Okay, the system only lets me fit in 9 levels. So I had to shorten it a bit.

Dust Speck - 1
Asteroid - 10
Planet - 25
Gas Giant - 50
Star - 100
Star Cluster - 250
Galaxy - 500
Supercluster - 1000
Universe - 2000

I don't know about being a gas giant Fraser. My daughter got on to read the forum and thinks it hilarious I'm a gas giant. I'll have to visit more often and improve my ranking!

KB3HTS
2003-Oct-05, 09:38 PM
How about "brown dwarf" instead? That should be safe from juvenile joking...

DippyHippy
2003-Oct-05, 11:56 PM
Cool!! Thanks Fraser & Planetwatcher :D

Tina, to be honest, that thought went through my mind too LOL Knowing how some people's minds work, just be glad we're not named after planets and you're not Uranus ;)

Dips

Planetwatcher
2003-Oct-06, 04:55 AM
KB3HTS beat me to the punch in the brown dwarf suggestion. ;)
Frasier's system reconizes nine ranks (officially)

But we could unofficially reconize sub-ranks. B)

But I do believe that brown dwarf status should be worked for. :D
And it should be closer to the star rank then the gas giant. IMH
Perhaps, we can unofficially call say 80, or 85 brown dwarf. (With Frasier's approval of coarse.

But to be fair, if we do that, we should sub-rank star, star cluster and galaxy
as well.

Perhaps we can even use the HR diagram to subdivide.

Matthew
2003-Oct-06, 08:03 AM
Who would keep the sub-classification list upto date? Would we want everyone to put into their signiture 'I am officially Brown Dwarf poster'?

Matthew
2003-Oct-06, 08:16 AM
It could work, if everyone kept their signatures upto date and accurate. We'd have to have a reporting system if people started to say 'I am officially Brown Dwarf poster' when they had only 2 posts.

Tinaa
2003-Oct-06, 12:09 PM
You know Dips, I'm working with emotionally disturbed kids this year at the local high school, so Uranus would be an improvement over some of the things I've been called! But, you're right, gas giant is better than brown dwarf, considering than I am of rather short and round stature with dark skin and hair! :P

kashi
2003-Oct-06, 01:55 PM
I don't think rankings are that important...they merely serve to keep the beurocrats happy. It's good that they're now related to astronomy, now let's get on with what this forum is really about!

Kashi

DippyHippy
2003-Oct-07, 02:37 AM
Oh come on now Kashi - where's your sense of fun? :D

Granted, some people take the whole idea of rankings waaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously and some will even post nothing in particular to boost their rating, but at the end of the day it's just a bit of fun and there's no harm in making the most of it.

In fact, I would encourage it

2003-Oct-07, 04:55 AM
I agree with DippyHippy. We should all have some fun sometimes. And it's more friendly for newer people if it's fun.

How about a base sixteen progression? I presumed the nine rankings did not include the Administrator rank. If I am wrong, adjust the rankings accordingly. Another option is to make the rankings linear.

decimal hex title
0000-0015 000-00F Asteroid
0016-0031 010-01F Moon
0032-0063 020-03F Planet
0064-0127 040-07F Gas Giant
0128-0255 080-0FF Star
0256-0511 100-1FF Solar System
0512-1024 200-3FF Star Cluster
1024-2047 400-7FF Galaxy
2048+ 800+ Universe
Administrator

Since the ranking is based upon the number of posts, simply subdivide the main categories by the number of subcategories desired. Those that are interested in ranking themselves or others can check the posted rankings list and see where their number of posts puts them. A quick way is to just compare numbers.

I was thinking that perhaps the number of posts per unit time (day, week, month, quarter, or year) would be more appropriate.

Another thought is that a ranking system based upon the number of posts may not be a good idea as it may encourage frivolous postings.

Planetwatcher:
I thought I did <_< , but if your "that" is different from what I presume "that" is  , you may wish to be a bit more specific  . The first column is the decimal range, the second column is the hexadecimal range, and the third column is a suggested title for each range. The headers did not align very well as I composed it using a fixed width font and Monaco is not available on this page.

Hey, we worked hard for our rankings didn't we Dippy?

Emptying garbage isn't so bad, ;) but helping with supper, boy that's the biggest killer. First play gofor, then clear the table, and of coarse eat. :D
Then on my way back here. "Where do you think you're going. Those dishes won't wash themselves!"

Then there's "come and see what the cat is doing"
"I have a question for you."
"Honey, will you..."
"I thought you were done with that for the night."

"You know you've been on that thing X hours?" When actually I got on X hours ago, but actually been on 20 minutes, at most, undisturbed. ;)
I could go on, but it's nothing most of you don't know about. ;)
But it's like she has radar for when I hit the on switch. :o

Welcome to the club, Dips. It's really great, keeps us grounded you know? I waited till I was 41 to tie the knot, and I wish I'd done it sooner...No, wait, I really had a good bachelor's life, so it worked out just right!!! Yeah, I wouldn't change a thing!!

Hey Jimmy

RE The pretty pictures... if you click on your own name when you're signed in, it takes you to a summary page with your info... underneath, where it has your name in bold, there are four (I think) links and one of them is "Avatar Options"...

Just use a pic on your hard drive or one from online (although make sure you're not ripping anyone off in the process )

jimmy
2003-Nov-07, 03:18 AM
Thanks DH, I looked in the Avatar section but it seems they either have all been used or I don't like them. When I have time I'll try to find a nice picture and put it in as per your instructions. jimmy

Universe - 2000

Has any thought been given to re-instituting the ranking levels in lieu of the merge a few months ago?

For what its worth, I think a re-calibration would definitely be in order with Universe coming in at perhaps 25,000 posts.
