View Full Version : Discussion: "Killer" Asteroid will Miss

2003-Sep-03, 05:30 PM
SUMMARY: Additional observations from astronomers have decreased the likelihood to virtually zero that Asteroid 2003 QQ47 will strike the Earth in 2014. The asteroid was first discovered on August 24 by the LINEAR observatory and astronomers put its odds at 1 in 909,000 at hitting the Earth, but the additional observations on Monday night extended those odds to 1 in 2.2 million, which is below the background risk of asteroid strikes on any given year. If the 1.3 km asteroid were to strike the Earth, it would cause immense damage on a continental scale... but it won't.

$10 if anyone can record a segment about this on the news (as opposed to the news of the asteroid threatening the Earth in 2014)

I'll bet this specific story doesn't get reported! It's just too... non-sensational LOL

It is intresting to speculate what the political and social affects would have been if the news had been that the probability of an impact was high? The human race united in a common cause or petty in-fighting?

At the rate they're discovering asteroids, it's inevitable to happen in the next couple of years. At the same time, the odds are still going to be fairly high that it's going to miss. It'll be interesting to see whether governments can be decisive when the risks aren't certain and there's lots of time to procrastinate.
