View Full Version : Bill Kaysing's book on Amazon

I was fooling around on amazon.com, looking into HB materials, and was curious about Bill Kaysing's book's ranking (it's at 103,000, if you must know). Amazon will commonly pair books of similar topics to help them sell. What book do you think was paired with Mr. Kaysing's? Heehee. See for yourself (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0787304875/qid=1032393794/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-7832250-4230411?v=glance&s=books). Hopefully the pairing will still be there for a while.

I noticed this. Why would they pair up your book with Kaysing's? /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif

If you worked for Amazon, wouldn't YOU pair up Bad Astronomy with, well...BAD ASTRONOMY???

I sure as heck would!!

This forum needs an evil smiley... /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I speculate that Amazons data mining software is responsible for this one. A lot of people who look at Phils book probably also look at this one too if only for the humor. What the data-miner is looking for is trends so if it sees a lot of people looking at "BA the book" AND Kaysing, it will think that people of similar interest to Kaysing will buy Phils book. While this is a vast oversimplification of how data mining works, I hope it suffices for the moment

I, too, feel this is an artifact of the computer. I don't claim to know how data mining works or anything, but I suspect that they don't have actual people comparing the books and saying "These would look good together." Rather, they have the computers sorting various information. It could be as simple as looking at key words: Science, Astronomy, Moon Landings - hey, these books are similar. Or it could be something more sophisticated as mentioned: people looking at this book also looked at this book, they must have something in common people like together. *shrug*

As I wrote in another thread, on the page for Sibrel's DVD, they pack it together with "Capricorn One". Computer humor.

Not a bad pairing, really. If folks do buy both, at least they'll get both sides. (And the BA gets a royalty, which would probably drive Kaysing crazy.**)

I see his book got a 4-star rating... sort of:

That being said, let me say that this is less science and more science fiction. It should be noted that Kaysing was a WRITER, not a scientist. All of his information is second-hand, and little of it from any authoritative source.

If you want a detailed explanation of why the "hoax" idea is hogwash, check out

where the February 2001 FOX broadcast is disected point-by-point.

I wonder which reference Amazon deleted from this review?

** Yeah, yeah... a short putt.

I'm still chuckling over the fact that if you type "Bart Sibrel" into Google, Clavius (http://www.clavius.org/) is the first site that comes up.

That's just too funny BA!
Actually I'm kind of encouraged. Perhaps it's a way to get people to look at both sides of the argument.

Well, I just checked (10:30am CDT) and the book it's paired with now is "You're Being Lied To!", which also seems appropriate. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Although I was logged into Amazon at the time, so now they'll probably start recommending a bunch of hoax crap to me. Thanks a lot, BA! /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Just a thought, but maybe the pairings are customer specific? I think they know I already have BA's book.

Yahoo gives this first page of responses to "Bart Sibrel".

He mainly pulls up sites that debunk him.

Well, it's paired with Worlds in Upheaval now.

Here's something from one of the reviews:

Ironically, this book began as a satire of the moon hoax theory. Kaysing was contracted to write an outlandish tome that would make fun of the theory, showing how ridiculous it is. But, the story goes, as he researched his quarry, he became convinced that NASA had indeed defrauded everybody and that the astronauts never got farther from earth than an airplane.

I did not know this. Can anyone confirm it? If so, it seems he met the intended purpose.

Here's a reason to buy the book:

I won't go into Kaysing's "proof" of all this, because there is none. His creativity, however, can be amusing. Kaysing writes that while we thought we were watching moon walkers bound along the moon's surface 250,000 miles from earth, they were actually getting down in Las Vegas girlie bars. His evidence? He has a full-page spread of an exotic dancer. Of course, we don't see any astronauts, but the dancer sure is nice to look at.
