Our solar system is located in the alpha quadrant and I beleive that a quadrant is broken into smaller sections. How long (wide) is the alpha quadrant, in light years, or parsec, or what ever makes it the easiest to explain. And how wide are the smaller sections, and are there even smaller sections after that?

I don't know that the Alpha Quadrant is anything more than a Star Trek term but ... Our Milky Way galaxy is a spiral galaxy and essentially looks like a circle (in the plan view). Quadrant means "a fourth part". So what you do is look at the gralactic core and divide the galaxy into four. The alpha quadrant is the quadrant that has Orion's Arm in it.

Josh is right... there's no alpha quadrant... that's just a Star Trek invented term :)

And you gotta watch those shape-shifters like Odo near the wormhole....

Interesting Star Map Josh, I never realised we were so close to Vulcan, I'm frankly surprised those logicians haven't visited us as yet. ;)

From your description I envision pie-slice shapes for the quadrants, yet some guesses of the configuration of the MW show the Orion arm wrapping around more than 180 degrees as do most of the major arms.

Hum,
indeed, the United Federation of Planets (UFP) set up the current sector designation system sometime in the 24th Century.

Indulge yourself! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sector_(Star_Trek))

Looking at the linked wikipedia site, I noticed that we in the Alpha quadrant get a very large chunk of the galaxy. It may look like an even split, but notice how much of the spiral we claim as compaired to the othe quadrants. Is this a fair representation for the other worlds, or is the UFP secretly trying to take over the whole galaxy? I smell conspiracy.
