View Full Version : Blue areas on Martian maps?

I've seen many maps of Mars with significant blue portions (like Earth's seas). I've even seen one coloured by altitude with portions of the map marked as sub-zero altitude.

* What is the reference altitude on Mars?
* What do the colours signify on a Martian map, if they signify anything at all? (Earth examples: blue - sea, green - plains, tones of brown/red - hills and mountains, white - snow-capped mountains)

Colors on a globe usually mean different things. It depends on what it's measuring and is a good "at-a-glance" indicator. It can measure altitude, gravity, water content, specific mineral/chemical content, magnetic field, etc. It's best to try and find out what it means too. It never, however, is what the globe actually looks like. The colors themselves are also arbitrary, but usually blue is at one end while red/gray/white is at the other and the rest of the colors are in the same place as on a color spectrum. By the way, have you ever seen a gravity map of the Moon? It's worse than Io in visible light.

You got a point there ;) .. Why would they want to color pics of "Mars"?
