View Full Version : Discussion: Volcanoes Would Be Good Future ...

2004-Jan-28, 03:19 PM
SUMMARY: When selecting targets for Spirit and Opportunity, NASA engineers were very cautious about where the rovers could land. They needed to choose targets which had a low elevation, flat terrain, and free of large boulders that could destroy the spacecraft. Fortunately, both Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum have enough scientific value to make the trip worthwhile. Since the airbag technology has been so successful, future missions might get a little more dangerous, like landing on a volcano.

Is all the volcanoes on Mars are dead? or some of them still erupt lava...Marsquake?

i think that indeed all martian volcanoes are extinct, the danger will probably be due to the irregularity of terrain that exists in these areas...and it'd be a long way to fall if it 'over bounced'

Wow !

What a crazy idea. We have been very fortunate to get two landers down intact and operational due to the fact that they landed in good terrain. Our accuracy at targeting seems amazing considering the distances the vehicles have traveled but what we have done is a far cry from landing inside a volcanic (if they are indeed volcanic) crater where so little is known of the terrain. Lets not even think of this till we have the capability to look at a sight and decice wheather to land there or go on to another smoother site.

I think it is a good idea to land in a volcano we would learn how marses volcanic structure is.
