View Full Version : Someone got an idea to a project of mine..?

Hello. I am new on this forum and I am planning a school project. I think it shall be about Solar Sails, because it must be related to Solar Energy.

I must come with a new idea to the lecture. A small idea, like in what other way something related to solar energy could be used and so on.

If we take Solar Sails for example, can you do something else to get them better, hope you understand what I want? I hope you can help me. I am not that old either, and I do live in Sweden.

Maybe it would be better to explain what the best design and placement of a sun panel is?

There is a thread based on solar sails in robotic space exploration forum

Thought if someone have another idea to a project also. Thanks. But what can i come with, I suck at coming up with things :(

Shall i tell how many Solar Cells a household would need?

u can use solar energy to calculate the Sun's temperature ^^
Hope this help

How about if you attached a solar sail to a line that was attached to a generator; like a yo-yo or like the starter to a lawn mower with a spring. That is, what if you unfurled your solar sail and instead of attaching it to a ship which it pulls across space, you attach it to something stationary (like the moon), with a tremendously long cable attached to a spool on a generator with a spring loaded return. Research question, would the sail pulling the spool and turning the generator create more energy than it would take to reel in the collapsed sail? What would be the maximal distance to resistance ratio? This is way over my head but I might understand the answer...
Is this more like the kind of Idea you are looking for?
Don't use it!!!
Think up something else. Do your own homework!!!
However, you thought of asking here, shows innitiative, intelligence; where could you find the answer to such a question? Here is a good place.. what else can you do with a solar sail? I'm thinking Solar surfing the shadow of the moons solar wind ebbtide, that way if you get blown out you're still near eart's gravitational pull....
Sweden's cool... uh actually kinda cold right now I'd imagine... up in the north Febuary IS the longest month of the year after all...
Perhaps pulling asteroids into safe or profitable orbits?
Certainly advertising will want space on those huge platforms...
I'm certain having the sail also be a solar collector will come to pass? bottom line is, if you can make the sail absorb ALL the photons that hit it will it be invisible? :P

It is hard to come up with things and I did have a lot to do, soon i must having this project ready :(

If we talk about sun cells. What can I do with those to get them to work more effectiv? Can I say that it is my own Idea if i calculate how much sun cells I will need for a house? No? What can I do to say that it was my idea. I must come up with something simple and that not is unbelievable :(

Check out this site, they teach u how to make Solar Cell in ur house.
see http://www.scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/ech....html#solarcell (http://www.scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/echem/echem2.html#solarcell)

Hope this really help

This may be a long shot, but how about a presentation of using light magnifiers in space to create a solar powered laser, to be used in mining asteroids for ores and metals which could be used to construct space crafts?

I've not heard anyone else come up with such a use, so it may be new.
It is diffenently futureistic, so a design would be needed for transporting such a device, and considerations wheither it would be robotic, or manned.
The device could even use solar sails for propulsion, perhaps in conjunction with ion engines or the recently discussed plasma engines.

Just an idea to chew on. Proabley not as good as other ideas I've had before, but I haven't thought much on it either.
