View Full Version : Discussion: Rover Sees a UFO?

SUMMARY: While watching the night sky with its panoramic camera, NASA's Spirit rover saw something surprising - a streak of light that was probably the brightest object in the sky. But what was it? It could have been a meteorite, or an old, dead spacecraft that orbited overhead. Based on the direction of the trail, the only spacecraft in that orbit, moving at that velocity would be Viking 2.

What do you think about this story? Post your comments below.

That must be an meteorite that across the atmosphere....

I am agreeing with Tiny, that it may just be a planetoid burning up in the atmosphere. Awesome sight though.

Oh boy... I can't wait for the conspiracy theories to start on this one LOL I think it's most likely a meteor too...

Shall we start the conspiracy theories off Dips? could be amusing.

We really should start the theories! That would be dead amusing alright.

OK folks I know you're waiting for me...

Well I'm gonna disappoint you all & bet $50 bucks it was Viking probe...!!!?

Okay, let us say it was meteor, comet, spacecraft, etc. But UFO? What are they doing there? No, no, no, it was not UFO.

But maybe it was. Is the rover equipped with some tools to introduce "humanity" to other creatures out there?

Yes, Nuradnan! It's equipped with laser weaponry to blast it out of the Martian skies!!! (That's the American-style "diplomacy", brother).

By definition it is a UFO. its Unidentifed, its flying, and its an object

Faulkner's right. Didn't y'all know Mars is a suspected Al-Quieda training camp?? We can't find the buggers on Earth so - logically - they must be on another planet. It's obvious, really.

 you may be onto something there Dippy! But lets get back on top before we give away all the secrets...

I'd imagine that a viewer would see numerous streaks of light from meteoroids and the viking probe..

What more can be said? :P The classical definition of a U.F.O.! Itīs not a flying saucer, nor is it a bird, neither is it a plane - its - guess who? :P

So that is what is behind Bush's real decision to back a space program; he is looking for weapons of mass destruction!

He has to look for intelligence "out there" very little of it surrounds him.

It was a cow. Seriously though, it could have been a ufo, but it was more likely to be a rock burning up in the sky.

Are all of the Echo series balloons accounted for? It could've been one of them, blown out by the solar wind and taking all these many years to get to mars. They used the very best mylar back then, it could very well last that long.

I think that it was an astroide too but it would be cool if it was a ufo. B)

I like the cow theory. Didn't Dave Barry come up with one like that?

Cows and pigs can fly. That is what happens when you get madcow disease.

Sooo Who out there thinks there is an atmosphere on mars? <_<

It must be a meteorite. If it is an orbiting satellite,as suggested by some, how does it maintain orbit if it is low enough to sail through the Martian atmosphere?.. Grothy

Its not a cow, its Chook, if a second is seen then it is either Faulkner or Dips!!! all part of the conspiracy...:P

It's not the only picture of things in the sky taken by the rovers !!, It's the only streaky one I have seen tho'.

I am a bit late adding to this topic. The rovers have taken quite a few pictures of unidentified flying objects. They are quite visible in many of the pictures. This is the only one I have seen 'streaking', all the others are blips in the sky. So, yeah, I guess this is a meteor.

In 1989, a russian craft taking photos of mars, took a photo of a shadow on a martian moon....that shadow was estimated to be 1 mile wide and 15 miles long...shortly after that the probe "disappeared" :o
At that point in time, the Russian space agency decided that it was not in their best interest to "explore" mars.
What else has been happening in the last 15 years

Maybe it was the UFO that caught the Viking 2. So, it's the Viking 2 (inside the UFO).
