Here a new theory on how cosmic rays are generated is put forward by scientists from Las Alamos National Laboratory. They think magnetic field reconnections are responsible for the acceleration of particles and are the source of strong radio and X-ray emissions.
Why not give magnetic field reconnection it's true name; a discharge. That way we could more easily see that electric fields are needed for magnetic phenomena, and not the other way around.

Cheers.

Thanks VanderL,

this is an interesting story. The question of the origin of the 1e20eV cosmic rays has been an interesting one with few if any satisfying options. It would be interesting to see a computer model that shows how such particles might be created this way. Hopefully the folks at LANL will have a good numerical model for this soon.
