SUMMARY: Here's a new 1024x768 wallpaper of the Pleiades Star Cluster taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronomers recently used Hubble to help settle the mystery of just how far away these stars are. They used a technique called parallax to measure the angle from the Earth to three different stars in the cluster at various times in the year. From this they were able to determine that the cluster is between 434 and 446 light-years away; a distance which agrees with recent measurements by the Mt. Wilson and Palomar observatories.

Wow, that is a very impressive picture. Hubble has amazing optics-you can even see the spherical shape of the stars instead of them being a bright speck!
