View Full Version : Need a definition...cryovolcanic

Greetings All,
While reading an artical here on UT, I ran into a term that has caught my attention and I don't know what it means (and it's not in my dictionary). In the recent artical "Something oozed on Titan's surface", http://www.universetoday.com/am/publish/so...an.html?8112004 (http://www.universetoday.com/am/publish/something_oozed_titan.html?8112004) the term "Cryovolcanic" is used...what does this word mean? Volcanic obviously refers to volcanos and I always thought that "cryo" usually refered to something very cold (ala cryogenics). What is this...a volcano that spits out glaciers?

Bright Blessings,

Basically yes. It looks and acts like a volcano, but uses materials with much lower melting points. So instead of spewing bubbling cauldrons of sulfates and silicates, these volcanos are spewing what we would call ices.
