Hi again folks, I have put this topic here as it is not directly related to astronomy.

I am interested in resources and information related to the chemistry of the earth's atmosphere in the past, specifically, what precipitated the changes and detection techniques, can anyone assist me in this query?

I brought this to the front again to add another part of a request, does anyone know of any freeware programs related to weather pattersn and atmospheric circulation?

Have you heard about "fossil air", maybe this article might come in handle for your research.
The title : Earth's ancient atmosphere trapped in rocks

Here's another from a couple of years ago: http://www.brightsurf.com/news/dec_02/EDU_...ews_122002.html (http://www.brightsurf.com/news/dec_02/EDU_news_122002.html).

Actually, its the same song but second verse. Someone checking the same sulfur-sourced oxygen but looking inside of diamonds. The strange thing to me is that a common notion of diamond formation is that they were pressed and stressed deep in volcanic formations, so they weren't exactly open to atmospheric exposure. Of course, if you take the fairly discredited idea that diamonds were pressed out of coal, which was plant material, then that changes things a bit. Still, there are ancient insects in amber that has bubbles that have been tapped for analysis, so you might search for that kind of data.

There are two problems with finding real relics of truly ancient atmospheres. The residues of any ancient life were anerobic bacteria according to most guesses, and ancient bacteria didn't exactly make the best fossil records. Then too, if it was the kinds of hydrocarbons that people were guessing from the gas giants, and a certain moon, then most of that has broken and reacted again many multiple times since then. It would be akin to finding the original rain drops. Good luck.
