Just found this posted in another forum. It's pretty humorous. I wonder just how accurate it is?

I think the weakest parts of the connection is that the railroad guages weren't all that standard, years ago, and that the tunnel isn't named.

Thanks, Grapes. I hadn't realized it had been Snopesed. I shoulda checked there first. I know that railroad gauges in general weren't and still aren't standardized, but I wasn't sure about an American standard. In any case, it seemed a bit of a stretch to me to link them directly to ancient Roman roads. My guess is that railroad gauges were really decided by the "well, that seems about right" approach.

But the biggest question was whether the size of the shuttle boosters was in any way dependent on the shipping factor, as in having to go through a tunnel. Maybe the considerations were simply more general, such as the need to fit sections on railroad cars?

Maybe I should have put this one in the Bad TV section, since it's similar to other misconceptions out there. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

because when you get right down to it, why rails are spaced the way they are isn't all that interesting a topic to most people.
