SUMMARY: It's been 15 years since the magnificent Hubble Space Telescope was sent into orbit. Since then, it's taken more than 700,000 photographs and helped to advance our understanding of the Universe in so many ways. Here's a 1024x768 wallpaper image of just one of those photographs - the Eagle Nebula. It was taken using Hubble's new Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS).

I'm just so pleased to see the Hubble space telescope has now completed 15 years in orbit! :) It really has given us some stunning images of the Universe. It's such a shame it is being planned to bring it crashing down to Earth in just a few years time.

I don't know how much leeway the new Administrator for NASA has in the possible repair programme after his former colleague decided it was far too risky a business too send a shuttle to carry it out but - along with many, many others I would like to see Hubble repaired & upgraded & thus providing us with 100's more spectacular images of the Universe.

I'm very impressed every time I see pictures from hubble.
Not bad for a 15 year old baby, huh? :)

The best source for Hubble images I've found so far is ESA's image archive at:

I have wanted to see this part of the Eagle Nebula for a long time. I don't know if I would have called it the Fairy (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050425.html)though, it always appeared more of a mermaid to me.
