Here's an interestin image of Saturn. Look closely where the rings go behind the planet, and see how they appear to bend sharply just above the clouds.

SUMMARY: In this image of Saturn, taken by Cassini, it's possible to see how Saturn's atmosphere distorts the rings right next to the planet. This happens because Saturn's atmosphere refracts the light coming from the rings, similar to how object in the water look distorted and out of position.

When the sun sets you notice that the shape is not circular. It is squashed and there are ripples on the side edges. Is it possible to measure the ripples and derive a refractive profile of the earth atmosphere ?

The curve in Saturn's rings is quite short and not quite so clear as the curves superimposed on the sun's circular outline.
