View Full Version : Discussion: Space Shuttle Cleared for Landing

2005-Aug-05, 04:16 PM
SUMMARY: NASA has given the space shuttle Discovery a green light to return to Earth on Monday, August 8th. The agency's Mission Management Team has decided that the shuttle's heat shield and other systems are in good shape, after Wednesday's spacewalk to remove excess gap filler between shuttle tiles. The team also decided that a torn thermal blanket won't be a risk as the shuttle re-enters the atmosphere.

Amen to that, TuTone. Even with a safe return there will be a lot of work to do to reduce debris risk further and improve inflight repair techniques, although the spacewalks were impressive being the first time attempted and with such inherent risks working so close to the tiles.

2 hours to go hope they make it .
it should be ok as this time they have actually inspected the craft instead of just praying that there was no real damage

As of 4 minutes ago re-entry was no-go due to weather conditions.
Next chance is in about 90 minutes.

Come home safely, Discovery...

Yep, they've postponed it until tomorrow, so the lucky beggers get to spend an extra day up there!

Commander Collins agreed. "We're going to enjoy another day on orbit and we'll see you on earth tomorrow," she said.

Phew! I think there was a collective sigh of relief when Discovery landed in California earlier this morning.......

Now we wait to see what happens next.

Would have posted earlier but just woke up after the 6 hour drive.

Went to see the landing, unfortunately Edwards wasn't open to the general public. so we went to the general viewing areas. Looked lovely coming over LA to Edwards, if it were 10 minutes later, we could have seen so much more. Just a wonderful experience none the less.
