usa today article (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2005-08-17-rewilding_x.htm) about an idea to restore the environmental balance the continent lost when people arrived from Eurasia 13,000 years ago and slaughtered the giant animals in about 400 years

I think the climate might be a little screwy for sabretooth and mastadon ... but if they wait a while, they could bring back diplodicus and T. Rex! :D

Actually, "Sabre-Toothed Cats" is the correct term. There were no Sabre-Toothed Tigers.

It's an interesting idea. It'll probably never happen, though.

The guy quoted at the end of the article has a good point, though: why not introduce the species into the African plains, which are more sparsely populated than the American plains? Although, isn't there currently an effort to repopulate bison in the Great Plains?

The cool thing is that the 'sabre tooth' variety of cat evolved like a dozen times, independently... having a big mouth seems to be an evolutionary advantage, but only for a while...
