SUMMARY: Astronomers from the European Southern Observatory have found a very rare "Einstein ring" gravitational lens, where the light from a distant quasar is warped and magnified by the gravity of a closer galaxy. The two objects are so closely aligned that the image of the quasar forms a ring around the galaxy from our vantage point here on Earth. With careful measurements, the team was able to determine that the quasar is 6.3 billion light-years away, and the galaxy is only 3.5 billion light-years away, making it the closest gravitational lens ever discovered.
