Russia may quit using the Baykonur Space station in favor of a launch site in French Guiana, according to media reports at the weekend. http://www.herald.kz/wn/11.htm

French Guiana would be more practical because it would require less fuel to launch their payloads.

Baikonur is a problem also because it's not even in Russa - I think it's in Kazakhstan. There was an interesting article a year or so ago in Smithsonian Air & Space magazine about some Kazakhs who make a living (illegally) salvaging debris from Baikonur launches.
