View Full Version : Our Galactic Twin

2005-Sep-13, 10:12 AM
SUMMARY: The Spitzer Space Telescope has taken a picture of a galaxy called NGC 7331; astronomers believe it's a virtual twin of our own Milky Way galaxy. Since we're inside our galaxy, many of its interesting features are shrouded by dust, so looking at NGC 7331 is like looking into a mirror 50 million light-years away. Spitzer's infrared spectrograph has revealed that our twin seems to have an unusually high concentration of massive stars at its centre, or a moderately active supermassive black hole, similar to the one at the heart of our own Milky Way.

It's nice to have what appears to be a "replica" to observe provided we don't take it too seriously.
