View Full Version : Ghostly Spokes in the Rings

2005-Sep-19, 04:26 PM
SUMMARY: Scientists celebrated this week after finally seeing ghostly spokes in Saturn's rings. These spokes were first discovered by NASA's Voyager spacecraft 25 years ago, but so far, Cassini had failed to image them. These spokes are about 2,500 km long and 100 km wide (2,200 miles by 60 miles), and are believed to be created by Saturn's magnetic field interacting with the rings. Scientists thought that the visibility of the spokes depended on the angle of Saturn's rings to the Sun; the less sunlight, the easier it should be to spot the spokes.

Probably a flaw in the camera lens

 TuTone, you are a party pooper!
Carolyn has waited 3 decades to see those 'spokes' up close again ...
But I admit surprise at the suggestion that they still don't understand the phenomenon - it seems straightforward enough to me ...

Cool. :D

The article mentioned that Hubble had seen the spokes since Voyager - can any ground-based telescope pick them up?

I haven't heard of any that could, Champion_munch, ... in context, the 'spokes' are rather small phenomena, and not all that easy to distinguish from the rings, at least in optical wavelengths ... hmmm, perhaps they might stand out more in other parts of the spectrum...?
