View Full Version : Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D

SUMMARY: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For a desolation to be beautiful, there must be something special. Just after Dr. Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the moon, Neil Armstrong asked him what were his thoughts. He replied, "it's a magnificent desolation". Nearly forty years later, Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Mark Cowen combine the wizardry of IMAX with the magic of top flight professional entertainers to the film Magnificent Desolation. The result puts the viewer on the surface of the moon and lets them experience its strange but magnificent beauty all for themselves.

Did Aldrin have anything to say comparing the film experience with actually being there?

Hi Everyone,

I just saw Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon last night at an advance screening hosted by the Chicago area NSS (National Space Society) chapters. It was great and I strongly recommend it to all, especially folks who are not supporters of space exploration.

As to the film vs being there, I have not heard comments from any of the astronauts but some of the shots are really outstanding.

You can see a letter that Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell wrote on our behalf promoting the advance screening at:

I hope you all get a chance to see this movie.

Best Regards, Jim

I saw it at KSC this past Saturday. The visuals were amazing! The almost frighteningly stark landscape, dwarfing the landers in some of the wide shots was breathtaking!

My only complaint was that, at KSC anyway, Tom Hank's voice-over audio was very muffled and soft. The audio quality overall wasn't great for any of it, really. I am wondering if they didn't have a sound system problem they couldn't quite fix before they showed it.

Even still, I highly recommend it!
