View Full Version : Songs that never end

Everybody probably knows the "The Song that Never Ends" from Lambchop and Friends. Does anybody know any other similar songs that never end?

Here is one I like. My Mom taught it to me when I was a kid. It is a duet with a male and female:

There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza dear Liza
There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza a hole

Go fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
Go fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it

With what shall I fix it, dear Liza dear Liza?
With what shall I fix it, dear Liza with what?

With a straw dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, with a straw

But the straw is too long, dear Liza dear Liza
The straw is too long, dear Liza too long

Cut it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
Cut it, dear Henry, dear Henry, cut it

With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I cut it, dear Liza with what?

With an axe, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
With an axe, dear Henry, dear Henry, with an axe

The axe is too dull, dear Liza, dear Liza
The axe is too dull, dear Liza too dull

Sharpen it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
Sharpen it, dear Henry, dear Henry, hone it

On what shall I sharpen it, dear Liza dear Liza?
On what shall I hone it, dear Liza on what?

On a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
On a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, with a stone

But the stone is too dry, dear Liza dear Liza
The stone is too dry, dear Liza too dry

Well wet it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
Well wet it, dear Henry, dear Henry, wet it

With what shall I wet it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I wet it, dear Liza with what?

Try water, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
Try water, dear Henry, dear Henry, use water

In what shall I fetch it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
In what shall I fetch it, dear Liza in what?

In a bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry
In a bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, in a bucket

There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza
There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza a hole...

Re: Tunes that seem to go on forever...

I'm thinking that LAME Frampton tune "Do You Feel Like I Do" (Frampton Comes Alive) - When they spin that one ya might as well turn off the radio and take a world tour - Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, it runs a good (which is to say a BAD) 20 Min!!!
/////

Then there's that dude who's eternally "getting closer to his home" (Grand Funk Railroad; "I'm Your Captain"?) --- It's been neigh-on 40 Yrs -- wonder if he's made the trip yet??? Methinks his 'homeward' velocity is prey of degenerate acceleration (i.e, decreasing such that his "steady state" TTG is unchanging or compounding - kinda like half-life Re: radio-isotopes, if ya know what I mean)

The live version of "Dazed and Confused" on The Song Remains The Same by Led Zeppelin only stops when the needle nudges the inner groove - and that's at 33rpm... http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/muede/f045.gif

Also - "Time To Melt" by Lard is 25 minutes of the same relentless driving riff.

It may not go on forever, but the song "A googleplex bottles of beer on the wall" comes close. :eh:

How's about Lou Reed's 'Metal Machine Music'? :D --- Not exactly a 'song' - just four 16-minute tracks (both sides of two vinyl LPs) of pure, unmitigated, noise - complete with a 'hook grove' (at the end of the last track) to assure 'eternal play' of the closing seconds thereof...

Ya know, upon reflection, it seems that 'noise' sounded a lot like FSK... Now I wish I'd kept the album that I might have 'twiddled' with demodulation (Yep the technology existed away back in the mid 70's [and, in point of fact, long before]) --- Perhaps Lou was sayin' something after all!

Jethro Tull's album Thick as a Brick is a single, 45-minute track--but oh, it feels so much shorter. :)

Many of Klaus Schulze's albums have only one or two tracks; "The Dome Event" on the album of the same name is over an hour long.

"Ein Hund kam in die Küche
und stahl dem Koch ein Ei.
Da nahm der Koch ein Messer
und schlug den Hund entzwei.
Da kamen viele Hunde
und gruben ihm ein Grab.
Und legten einen Grabstein,
worauf geschrieben stand:
"Ein Hund kam in die Küche...""

How about "The year 2525". The end of the song is identical to the beginning. It quickly fades off before it gets annoying, but if it didn't......

The polka; "Chicken Dance."

Muhahaha, now it's in everyone's head -- even mine :( -- for the rest of the day.

Also: the instrumental chorus on the album version of, "Light my Fire," lasts for a good long time.

And... I remember this one:

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly
I don't know why she swallowed a fly
I guess she'll die

There was an old woman who swallowed a spider
That riggled and jiggled and wiggled inside 'er.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
But I don't know why she swallowed the fly
I guess she'll die

...

It does end at the eighth stanza, but it could be extended with some creative work.

"That's Life!"
"What's Life?"
"A magazine."
"What's it cost?"
"Fifty cents."
"I ain't got fifty cents."
"Well, that's life."
"What's life?"

Llama Llama Duck (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/llama)

here's a llama
there's a llama
and another little llama
fuzzy llama
funny llama
llama llama
duck

llama llama
cheesecake
llama
tablet
brick
potato
llama
llama llama
mushroom
llama
llama llama
duck

i was once a treehouse
i lived in a cake
but i never saw the way
the orange slayed the rake
i was only three years dead
but it told a tale
and now listen, little child
to the safety rail

did you ever see a llama
kiss a llama
on the llama
llama's llama
tastes of llama
llama llama
duck

half a llama
twice the llama
not a llama
farmer
llama
llama in a car
alarm a llama
llama
duck

is THIS how it's told now?
is it all so old?
is it made of lemon juice?
doorknob
ankle
cold
now my song is getting thin
i've run out of luck
time for me to retire now
and become a duck

Summer (The First Time)
Bobby Goldsboro

It was a hot afternoon,
Last day of June,
And the sun was a demon,
The clouds were afraid,
One-ten in the shade,
And the pavement was steaming.
I told Billy-Ray,
In his red Chevrolet,
I needed time for some thinking,
I was just walking by,
When I looked in her eye,
And I swore it was winking.

She was 31 and I was 17,
I knew nothing about love, she knew everything,
When I saw down beside her on the front porch swing,
And wondered what the coming night would bring.

The sun closed her eyes,
As it climbed in the sky,
And it started to swelter,
The sweat trickled down the front of her gown,
And I thought it would melt her.

She through back her hair,
Like I wasn't there,
And she sipped on a julep*,
Her shoulders were bare,
And I tried not to stare,
When I looked at her lips.

And when she looked at me,
I heard her softly say,
I know you're young,
You don't know what to do or say,
But stay with me until the sun has gone away,
And I will chase the boy in you away.

And then she smiled and we talked for a while,
And we walked for a mile to the sea,
We sat on the sand, and the boy took her hand,
But I saw the sun rise as a man.

Ten years have gone by,
Since I looked in her eye,
But the memory lingers,
I got back in my mind,
To the very first time,
And feel the touch of her fingers,

It was a hot afternoon,
Last day of June,
And the sun was a demon,
The clouds were afraid,
One-ten in the shade,
And the pavement was steaming...

Now go and take a cold shower, fellas :)

Okay, Do You Feel is long but I love it. I can't stand the other one. I have one that actually tops both though. Mountain Jam by The Allman Brothers. Great jam but it goes on for 33 minutes and some spare seconds. The only other song, in my collection, that comes close is Echoes - Pink Floyd. Shine On You Crazy Diamond, is technically longer than Echoes but it's divided on the album so I don't know if that counts.
